The Florida Sandhill Cranes, a subspecies the North American Sandhill Crane, are year round residents. The North American Sandhill Cranes will migrate here for the winter. 

I particularly love Sandhill Cranes. The interaction among Sandhill Cranes is most intriguing. Sandhill Cranes mate for life. What is particularly interesting is that if a male should die another male will not only take his place but also adopt the offspring. 

The oil painting shown above depicts the birds in a wild setting, but these large birds can be found in both rural and urban areas. In Port St. Lucie it is not uncommon to have them standing in the road blocking traphic. They seem to consider themselve something special. Well, they are.
